FLUOROSCOPY
Fluoroscopy is an x-ray technique, which uses ionising radiation to obtain real-time moving images of the interior organs. This allows a physician to see the internal structure and function of a patient.
- This imaging modality is used most commonly in the assessment of swallowing abnormalities. Diseases of the oesophagus, including reflux disease and a hiatus hernia can be assessed in adults and paediatric patients
- The colon is assessed using a barium enema technique
- Fluoroscopy is used in the assessment of fertility with a hysterosalpingogram
- In the assessment of fistulas
- Fluoroscopy is also commonly used to provide guidance in interventions such as lumbar punctures, arthrograms and facet joint infiltrations
